Childrens Characters
Tom and Jerry
One of the most famous children’s cartoons (if not the most famous), but also enjoyed by the older public, is definitely Tom and Jerry. Originally created by Americans William Hanna and Joseph Barbera between 1940 and 1957, the two ever-bickering characters have become renowned worldwide, and additional programs “starring” the two were later created, including a film. The simplicity as well as rapidity of the action scenes is highly entertaining for people of all ages. The plot of these cartoon shorts is an uncomplicated one and revolves around a single idea, namely Tom’s perpetual and mostly fruitless attempts to capture Jerry, in scenes of some what might call “side-splitting mindless violence”.

The Flintstones
As people have always taken pleasure in picturing life in the first stages of society, a cartoon was designed as an analogy between today’s social order and an era when people’s means of getting by were, to put it mildly, slightly different. The animated series called The Flintstones made its debut in 1960, being yet another success of Hanna-Barbera Productions. It’s based on the lifestyles of two families, the Flintstones and the Rubbles, who live in an uncertain period at the very beginning of civilization, presumably the Stone Age.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Many cartoons have been based on the perpetual fight against crime in the American urban scene, and one of the most popular over the years has been the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Initially comic book characters envisaged in the 1980s and first televised in 1987 , the Turtles were seen as original and different, and have captured the attention and fondness of millions of children worldwide. They are a team of four heroic turtles who have been trained in Ninjitsu and roam the city of New York, fighting crime and injustice. They live underground, in the sewers, together with their sensei called Master Splinter, a martial arts expert rat.

Tarzan
People have perpetually shown fascination towards stories involving the existence of  human beings in the wild, adopting animal-like mannerisms and suffering the necessary changes in order to mingle with animals, thus ensuring survival. The theme has been prolific as a basis for entertainment productions, such as The Jungle Book or Tarzan, the latter inspiring an animated series as well as an animated film, released in 1999 by Walt Disney Pictures.

Snow White
Although there is a plethora of very popular Disney characters of very different natures, some can be classed as falling into certain categories, based on a main trait they share. Such is the group of  “Disney princesses”, always strikingly beautiful, intelligent, kindhearted and innocent. These heroines are taken from timeless children’s fairytales and turned into protagonists of very successful animations. Among them are Cinderella, Belle (Beauty and the Beast) and Snow White, the main character in a beloved Brothers Grimm fairytale.
